  4. "All of Broadway is here tonight," said Producer Joseph Papp,
  5. and he was just about right. After eight years of high-stepping
  6. exuberance, Papp's A Chorus Line last week became the
  7. longest-running show in Broadway history, eclipsing the musical
  8. Grease. A spectacular 3,389th performance featured 332 past and
  9. present tophatted cast members (out of a total 457) from all of
  10. the Broadway and other companies. Preparations took three
  11. months. Director Choreographer Michael Bennett, 40, restaged
  12. the show for the anniversary, moving the various players in and
  13. out of their roles and gathering everyone for an untoppable
  14. 332-strutters-strong finale. Cost of the gala: $500,000, quite
  15. a bit for a one-night stand, but affordable considering that
  16. over the years more thana 22 million fans have seen A chorus
  17. Line, paying $260 million for the pleasure.
